In
Praise of Spring
In Praise of Spring is a selection of nature
sounds from a variety of habitats: White Poplar / Bur Oak
forest remnant, fields of hay and grain, tree-ringed slough,
dugout (water reservoir), spruce windbreak, farm buildings,
garden and lawn.
The slough and the dugout are intriguing,
ever-changing places. Such water areas attract and nourish a
great variety of species.
As spring progresses, the background sounds
change. Winter visitors such as Evening Grosbeaks give way
to a succession of returning migrants. The permanent
residents that are heard on the recording are: Black-capped
Chickadee, Ruffed Grouse, White-breasted Nuthatch,
Black-billed Magpie, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers and Red
Squirrels.
In
Praise of Spring came to mind one day at the edge of the
tree-ringed slough. From every shrubby patch around the
slough, Harris' Sparrows whistled a three-note somewhat
minor key song. The words to their song became clear and
"Praise of Spring" filled the air - here, three low notes;
there three, a half-step higher. The slough, a natural
catherdral, held the most memorable choristers ever heard,
each with an anthem to spring.
