landscape with native Manitoba wildflowers & grasses. Topics
covered include an introduction to using native plants in the
home, cottage & acreage landscapes, their propagation, native
landscape design, planting, maintenance & identification.
Part of the 3 hour workshop will be an actual hands-on planting
lab, so you will have a whole tray of seedlings to take home.
No previous gardening or native plant experience is necessary.
Workshops are taught by Prairie Habitats Inc. staff & held
at Winnipeg's beautiful Living Prairie Museum, 2795 Ness Avenue.

New for 2008
Two new informative workshops from Prairie
Habitats Inc. & Living Prairie Museum:
Prairie Pyro
(Completed for 2008)
Learn all about the role
of fire in the prairie ecosystem, its effects on the plants,
wildlife, soil & insects. Fire was an essential part of
the prairie landscape before settlement and has numerous benefits.
Discover the fascinating world of fire ecology, & learn
about the techniques & equipment used today in modern controlled
burns for native prairie management. Discover how to safely
do your own managed burns to improve the health and diversity
of a native prairie planting. We may even top the course off
with an optional controlled burn on a real native prairie!
Lecture portion completed for this spring, but
we're in the midst of conducting actual burns on native &
restored prairies in southern Manitoba when the weather permits.
If interested in participating, call Prairie Habitats Inc. for
more info & to register at 204-467-9371.
Collecting the Seed
Tuesday, September 9, 7:00 - 9:00 PM
This new workshop will
go into detail on how to collect your own wildflower and native
grass seed. The equipment and knowledge you will need, how to
locate seed sources, identify seedheads of native wildflowers
& grasses & the importance of this activity for the
future of many native species will be covered. Fun & educational,
it's something the whole family will enjoy. We will top the
course off with an optional field trip to apply what you have
learned so you can bring back some free native seeds for your
own property.
Please call Living Prairie Museum at
204-832-0167 to register.
2008 Native
Plant Sale Update
Thanks so much to all our wonderful customers!!
We have enjoyed the last 20 years immensely,
and now are moving on to a bit of a different focus. Keep watching
here for updates coming soon which will include guided, interpretive
tours to some of our favourite native prairies in southern Manitoba,
more seminars & wildflower/butterfly photography field &
lab workshops.
Prairie Habitats Inc. no longer will be
offering live plants for sale. You'll still be able to order many
of our popular native seeds, though, here in our on-line catalogue.
Our greenhouse has been sold & the new owners Aimee &
Wes of Prairieflora are in the process of getting
ready for the gardening season at their new location. We are very
encouraged by their keeness, enthusiasm & ability. We hope
our native plant customers will enjoy working with them as much
as we have. Here is their first message to Prairie Habitats Inc.'s
customers:
Introducing
Prairieflora!

Aimee Waruk & Wes McDonald of Prairieflora
Greetings to all! As the new proud owners of the Prairie
Habitats greenhouse we are very excited about the upcoming gardening
season. We have much to learn, but are already benefiting greatly
from the experience and expertise provided by Prairie Habitats.
We are planning to continue with the plant sale at Living Prairie
Museum, 2795 Ness Avenue in Winnipeg, this spring. Since this
is our first season, we're working hard to get the greenhouse
up & running, so we will not be able to take pre-orders. Please
refer to the Plant Catalogue on this website for plant details,
as we will be selling many of the same native prairie species.
Keep watching here for updates as well. If you have any questions
